Celiac disease is a chronic digestive disorder. The damage to the lining of the small intestine leads to the mal-absorption of minerals and nutrients. The destruction of the inner lining of the small intestine in celiac disease is caused by an immunological reaction to gluten. Gluten is a family of proteins present in wheat, barley, rye etc. Children with celiac disease may result in stunted growth and short stature as an adult. Refractory celiac disease is a rare condition in which the symptoms of celiac disease do not improve and may progress to cancer, despite a strict gluten free diet. Celiac disease is most common in Europe and particularly in Ireland, Italy, Sweden and Austria. Celiac Disease may appear at any time in a person's life and it is more common in the elder people.

There is no cure for celiac disease. The treatment of celiac disease mostly includes gluten free diet and the patients' calls for complete avoidance of gluten for life. A gluten free diet includes total avoidance of all foods made from wheat, rye and barley. Some oat preparations can be contaminated with wheat and it is probably best to avoid oats during the initial treatment with a gluten free diet. It is better to consult dietitians for a list of gluten free foods. Natural home remedies cannot cure celiac disease, but they can help to alleviate most troublesome symptoms.
As per Ayurveda, celiac disease is the result of the wrong decisions by the immune cells. The immune cells are observed to be behaving abnormally to gluten.
