Cypress - Very Useful Herb for Vein Disorders

Cypress

Cupressus sempervirens Cupressaceae Also called Italian cypress.


A tree typical of Mediterranean [Ourltries, the cypress has reddish ~rey bark and small, triangular, opposed leaves that overlap and cover the whole branch. The female flowers produce fruits (cones), made ~f round, soft scales, which turn yellowy grey when ripe. Both the ancient Egyptians and Romans dedicated the tree to their gods if death and the underworld) which may explain why it is often planted in cemeteries.


Parts used

  • Cones
  • These are gathered while still green, and used to make infusions, powders or extracts for capsules, tablets and drinkable solutions.
  • Cypress is also used in gels and ointments for external use.

Constituents

Cypress cones are composed mainly of dimeric proanthocyanidins, which have a strengthening effect on the veins improving blood circulation particularly in the hands and feet. The cones contain a small quantity of essential oil and diterpenic acids.


Medicinal uses

As it can effectively treat all kinds of vein disorders, cypress is commonly prescribed for haemorrhoids and varicose veins. Formulations often combine cypress with horse chestnut and witch hazel. Cypress is antiseptic, sedative and diuretic, and also has an antispasmodic action, which may explain why it is sometimes used to ease coughs.


Cultivation

Grow in well-drained, acid or alkaline soils in full sunlight and away from shelter and excessive wind.


CAUTION

  • To date, no sign of toxicity has been recorded from the use of the cypress cone, even when taken over long periods.
  • Caution should be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE

For internal use


TO TREAT varicose veins, haemorrhoids INFUSION Put 1 dessertspoon of crushed cones into a cup of boiling water. Drink 4-5 cups a day, before or between meals.


DRINKABLE SOLUTIONS Put 40-60 drops into a little water to dilute. Take two to three times a day before meals.


For external use


TO TREAT varicose veins GELS, OINTMENTS Gently apply to the affected areas. Massage-in working upwards. Do this in the evening just before going to bed, or as directed. AROMATHERAPY Dilute 2-4 drops in a carrier oil and massage into affected area.
