Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment For Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is a condition in which diverticuli in the colon rupture and results in infection in the tissues surrounding the colon. Diverticulitis is common in the western world, but it is rare in Asia and Africa. This disease has been reported to increase with age. Generally, it is uncommon before the age of 40 and mostly observed in more than 50% of people over the age of 60. Most patients with diverticulitis have no or a few symptoms. As per reports, some patients may develop bleeding, rupture and infection due to this disease.
An individual suffering from diverticulitis may have abdominal pain, abdominal tenderness, and fever. Most patients with diverticulitis have few or no symptoms. The diverticulitis in these individuals is found by chance, during tests for other intestinal problems. The most common symptoms of diverticulitis include abdominal cramping, constipation and diarrhea. Also, there is difficulty in passing stool through the left colon, which is narrowed by this disease. More serious complications may include collection of pus in the pelvis, colon obstruction, generalized infection of the abdominal cavity and bleeding into the colon. Constipation or diarrhea may also occur and collection of pus can develop around the inflamed diverticulum. The inflamed diverticula can erode into the urinary bladder, causing bladder infection and passing of intestinal products in the urine. Inflammation in the colon can also lead to colonic bowel obstruction.
Most patients with diverticulitis do not require any specific treatment. A high fiber diet and fiber supplements are advisable to prevent constipation and prevent the formation of more diverticula. Patients with mild symptoms of abdominal pain may be treated with anti-spasmodic drugs. The doctors recommend avoidance of nuts, corn, and seeds to prevent complications of diverticulitis. Drinking sufficient water can help to prevent constipation, which can be an irritating factor for diverticulitis patients. When diverticulitis becomes severe, antibiotics are usually prescribed. In severe diverticulitis with high fever and pain, patients are also given intravenous antibiotics. Some doctors recommend surgery for patients with persistent bowel obstruction or abscess.
