The inflamed diverticula can erode into the urinary bladder, causing bladder infection and passing of intestinal products in the urine. Inflammation in the colon can also lead to colonic bowel obstruction. Most patients with diverticulitis do not require any specific treatment. A high fiber diet and fiber supplements are advisable to prevent constipation and prevent the formation of more diverticula. Patients with mild symptoms of abdominal pain may be treated with anti-spasmodic drugs. The doctors recommend avoidance of nuts, corn, and seeds to prevent complications of diverticulitis. Drinking sufficient water can help to prevent constipation, which can be an irritating factor for diverticulitis patients. When diverticulitis becomes severe, antibiotics are usually prescribed.
