Herbal Remedies for Epidermoid Cysts

Epidermoid Cysts

Epidermoid Cyst: Overview

An Epidermoid cysts is a small, hard, benign (non-cancerous), slow-growing bump underneath the skin. This cyst is usually painless, but sometimes it may become painful, infected or ruptured. In such cases or for cosmetic reasons, the affected individuals can have the cyst surgically removed by a doctor.

Epidermoid cysts grow under the skin, and mostly develop out of ectodermal tissue. These cysts can appear anywhere on the skin, especially on those parts of the body where there is relatively less hair. Commonly, these cysts appear on the face, head, neck, back, trunk or genitals. The size of these small bumps can range from 1/4-inch to 2 inches across.

The appearance of Epidermoid cysts is similar to small bumps which are generally yellowish or tan in color; and are filled with pus (thick, yellow smelly matter). The central opening of the cysts is plugged by a tiny blackhead. If the cysts get infected or inflamed, the affected area may become red, tender, and swollen.

To diagnose an Epidermoid cyst, a doctor basically examines the small bump and the surrounding skin, and check out the sufferer's medical history. For officially confirming the diagnosis, the doctor may sometimes require an ultrasound or may refer the patient to a dermatologist.

Although Epidermoid cysts are characteristically non-cancerous, they may sometimes, in rare cases, lead to serious health complications like malignant tumors and skin cancer.

Causes of Epidermoid Cysts

The most common cause of the occurrence of Epidermoid cysts is the build-up of 'Keratin,' a protein which is naturally present in the skin cells. The appearance of the cysts results from the trapping of the Keratin protein beneath the skin due to some kind of disruption to the skin or to a hair follicle.

In most cases, the development of Epidermoid cysts is linked to acne or other skin conditions, skin injury or skin trauma, HPV infection, surgery, or excessive sun exposure.

Treatment of Epidermoid Cysts

Epidermoid cysts mostly stop growing on their own and subside after some time, without any treatment. Moreover, since these cysts are non-cancerous, they do not pose any potential risk to the affected individuals.

Most Epidermoid cysts are, therefore, never treated. But, if the cyst gets infected, or if it leads to redness or swelling, or if changes in size or character, the affected individuals should consult a doctor to have the cyst treated. Generally, the treatment options for Epidermoid cysts include the use of antibiotics and drainage.
